Fruit and Veggies (1998)

This series has its origins in my childhood on the farm. The grownups cultivated a vegetable garden. Under the cover of darkness, in our nightgowns, my cousins and I would tiptoe down the stairs and out the back door, headed straight for the choicest vegetables. The thrill was in the suspense of scurrying back up to bed without being caught. There was no greater delight than those midnight raids. Much later in life, I married a man who had a supreme sense of marketing fresh fruits and vegetables. I worked in his stores. This series connects my childhood life to my more recent life. The series grew out of my adult wish to slow down, pay attention, and honor what we rush past in our daily lives. It is an attempt to recast our regular, harried trips to the market, while pulling into play memories of my earlier devilment and pleasure.
